DNA Breed Identification

BioPet Vet Lab's DNA Breed Identification Test is the result of many years of research on how differences in DNA give rise to differences that are seen between breeds.

DNA governs the appearance and general behavioral characteristics of the dog. The DNA Breed Identification test compares DNA found in your dog with a comprehensive database of purebred dogs. In this way the test can determine which breeds are present in your dog. Learning what breeds (and their characteristics) are present in your dog can help you understand behavior and provide better medical care. You can finally answer the question… "So what kind of dog is that?"

The DNA Breed Identification test utilizes a cheek swab to collect DNA. Earlier methods of DNA collection involved blood, or visits to a veterinarian. All living cells in an animal contain DNA; therefore the cheek swab is the easiest and safest way to collect DNA at home.

Upon receipt at BioPet Vet Lab your samples are prepared and analyzed, resulting in a rapid and accurate determination of the breeds that have contributed to the makeup of your dog. BioPet Vet Lab will send you an Ancestry Analysis Certificate and Breed Behavior, Health and Personality Summary.

Your Ancestry Analysis will be shown in "levels". Breeds are detected as ranges rather than absolute values. The levels are defined as follows:

• Level 1: Over 75% of the DNA Found in your dog is from the breed listed.

  **Most mixed breed dogs will not contain Level 1 unless the dog has a purebred parent
• Level 2: Each breed listed represents between 37-74% of your dog's DNA.
• Level 3: Each breed listed represents between 20-36% of your dog's DNA.
• Level 4: Each breed listed represents between 10-19% of your dog's DNA.
• Level 5: Each breed listed represents less than 10% of your dog's DNA.

The DNA Breed Identification kit comes with:

• A DNA Swab Collection Device
• A Customer Information Card
• Detailed Instructions
• A postage paid envelope to send your DNA sample back to the lab

Results are normally mailed to your home two weeks after your sample is received by BioPet Vet Lab.
